THE MORE YOU KNOW
For Cane Corso’s, socialization at an early age (between 8-12 weeks) is of up-most importance! An unsocialized Corso is likely to be overly cautious or shy of people and may not have enough confidence to protect its owner. This should be a priority in training for at least the first 8 months.
Breeding for female Cane Corso's should not be allowed during the first heat cycle (usually at 10-12 mos. of age but as early as 6 mos.). At this age Cane Corso females are not fully developed in their body and muscle structure, and will stunt their growth. The ICCF will not register a litter of pups from a female that was bred before 8 mos. A heat cycle usually lasts for 21 days, and expect bleeding during the first 11 days.
When you take home your new puppy, it will not have completed its vaccination series and is still susceptible to diseases. Avoid allowing your puppy to roam about where many other dogs have been, i.e., rest areas, pet stores or even the Veterinarian's office. After it has received its third Parvo vaccination at 14 weeks, you can be more at ease.
Managing Shedding
To effectively manage your Cane Corso’s shedding, incorporating omega fatty acids into their diet is essential for promoting healthy skin and coat, ultimately reducing excessive shedding. Omega fatty acids play a crucial role in maintaining skin moisture and improving the overall condition of your dog’s coat.
In addition to omega fatty acids, ensuring a balanced and protein-rich diet is important for minimizing shedding and supporting optimal coat health. Avoiding sugary foods in your Cane Corso’s diet is also recommended as they can contribute to excessive shedding.
Hydration is key, so make sure to encourage increased water intake to support skin and coat health, which can help in reducing shedding.
Shampoo can also be considered for Shed Control. When selecting a shampoo for controlling shedding in Cane Corso’s, it’s important to consider ingredients like oatmeal or aloe vera that can soothe the skin and reduce shedding.
Look for shampoos containing omega fatty acids to promote a healthy coat and minimize shedding.
Avoid harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances that could irritate the skin and worsen shedding, opting instead for hypoallergenic options to prevent allergic reactions that may lead to excessive shedding.
Regular grooming practices and proper grooming tools are crucial in managing shedding issues.
Lastly, it’s beneficial to consult with a vet for dietary recommendations tailored to your Cane Corso’s specific shedding needs, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients to maintain a healthy coat and minimize shedding.
